SUBTROPICAL SURREAL

Sunny Side Up (2020-21) is a collection of vibrant artworks by emerging Brisbane-based contemporary artists that explore Brisbane’s subtropical identity, unique physical features and cultural atmosphere. The exhibition brings to the fore the optimism, abundance and playful spirit of the Sunshine State.

Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery transforms Brisbane’s laneways and city streets into imaginative, curious and engaging spaces with the return of Outdoor Gallery. Comprising of light boxes, banners, vitrines and evening projections, the Outdoor Gallery displays art outside in city streets.

Subtropical Surreal is a dreamy, animated mixture of domestic scenes. It magnifies the private and surreal moments of living in a city that is constantly renegotiating its relationship with the natural subtropical environment. This artwork was featured as part of Apple’s national campaign Behind the Mac – Made in Australia.

This piece was created with original illustrations by Phoebe Paradise, animations by Phoebe Paradise and Helena Papageorgiou, originally projected onto the cliffside at Felons’ Wharf for the Sunny Side Up Outdoor Gallery Program in 2020-21.

This work was acquired by the Brisbane City Council’s Public Art Collection as their landmark first digital art acquisition.
