Sunburnt in the Suburbs

Pine Rivers Art Gallery, City of Moreton Bay

05 November 2022 - 25 February 2023

What is the first thing you notice when you walk through your neighbourhood? The trees? The sound of cars? The smell of grass? The bark of your neighbour’s dog?

Stepping out of her car in Strathpine, the first thing Phoebe Paradise noticed was the long flat streets, the low-set houses and the big expansive sky. As she looked closer Phoebe discovered the details, yellow-glass windows, mismatched architecture and the glow of houses at dusk.

Sunburnt in the Suburbs is a fantastical journey through the neighbourhoods of Strathpine, Bray Park and Albany Creek, over a single day in the summer. Starting on the commercial streets of Strathpine, tracking through the suburbs to the dead-end of a cul-de-sac, Phoebe shares the charm of these places. As the temperature heats up and the bitumen starts to melt Phoebe encoirages you to find joy in the imperfections of these streets we call home.
